What’s new in JEE Main 2020?

  • From 2020, there will be 75 questions in JEE Main.
  • 60 Multiple choice questions and 15 numerical value with equal weightage.
  • The candidates have to pay the application fee through online mode only, there will be no option available of offline payment mode.
  • Candidates who have passed class 12th/ equivalent examination in the year 2018, 2019 or appearing in 2020 can appear in JEE Main- 2020.
  • Paper 2 for B.Arch and B.Plan of JEE Main 2020 will be conducted separately.
  • For B.Arch/B.Plan, instead of drawing section there will be a section of questions on Planning.
  • The number of exam centres has decreased from 264 to 233 Indian cities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Age: Candidates who have passed class 12th/equivalent examination in 2018, 2019 or appearing in 2020 are eligible to apply for JEE Main 2019 exam.
    Candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST) and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), must have been born on or after October 1, 1990 to be eligible for JEE Main. Candidates of these categories have been given a relaxation of 5 years.

    Note: Date of birth will be considered as mentioned in the Secondary Education Board/ University certificate.
  • Subjects: It is mandatory for Candidates to have studied at least 5 subjects in 10+2. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics are compulsory subjects.
  • Score in 12th standard or equivalent exam: General category candidates require a minimum score of at least 75% or should be in the top 20 percentile in their respective 12th board or equivalent examination.
    For SC or ST candidates, the minimum score is 65%.
  • Aadhar Card requirement: Registered Aadhar Card Number is mandatory to apply for JEE Main exam.
  • Number of attempts: Candidates can attempt JEE Main a maximum of 3 times. Candidates can attempt JEE Advanced only for 2 consecutive years.

How to Apply?

  • Please read the procedure and information bulletin carefully before you start filling the Application Form.
  • Selection of date/slot of Computer Based Examination of Paper-1.
  • The mode of Application for JEE Main-2019 is ONLINE only. There is no OFFLINE mode of Application.
  • Please ensure your eligibility for the JEE Main exam as per the eligibility criteria laid down.
  • Each Candidate is allowed to submit only one Application Form. Multiple applications of a candidate are liable to be rejected.
  • Aadhar card is mandatory for application process.
  • The name of the candidate and his/her parents name in the application form must exactly be the same as registered in Class 12th/ equivalent qualifying Examination. No prefix/title such as Mr/Shri/Fr/Dr/Mrs/Smt/Col etc. should be used.
  • No options can be changed at a later stage after submission of an application. However, a chance may be given to the candidates to correct/modify some of the particular(s) of the application form online only, with valid reason(s), after one week of closing date.

Application Procedure

In order to appear in JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced) 2020, the candidates are required to apply through online mode only as per the procedure described below:

Step 1: Applying Online and Submission of Application
  1. Supply all the required details of the Candidate while filling up the online form.
  2. On submission of details, an Acknowledgement Page with Application No. shall be generated.
  3. Candidates are required to take printout of Acknowledgement Page and keep it for future reference.
  4. The Acknowledgement Page is NOT required to be sent to JEE (Main) Secretariat.
  5. The application fee payment can be made only by the online mode through credit/debit card/Paytm/UPI/ Net Banking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is new in JEE Main 2020?

Paper 1 for B.E/B.Tech. will have 75 questions instead of 90 questions such that 20 questions are of multiple choice and 5 questions of numerical value in each subject with equal weightage. There will be no negative marking on numerical value questions.Paper 2 for B.Arch and B.Planning will be conducted separately.

The candidates applied for both paper 1 & Paper 2 but do not want to appear in Paper – 2 or Paper -1. Is this possible?

There is no compulsion for candidates to appear in both papers, they can appear in the paper of their choice. But there is no refund of the fee.

In case photograph is not having name and date, would the form be rejected?

Name of the candidate and the date on which the photograph is taken is to be mentioned on the photograph, but in case uploaded photograph does not have name and date, the form will not be rejected and no correction is required in such a case and he/she will be issued admit card for appearing in JEE (Main) – 2020 as usual.

How many attempts can I give in JEE Main? Can I give it in 2021 also?

Candidates can attempt JEE Main a maximum of 3 times. However details of eligibility for 2021 has not been announced. It is expected to be available along with the brochure which may be released tentatively in August 2020.

Will a candidate have a choice to change the mode of examination?

No, the JEE MAIN 2020 is a completely computer based test (CBT). The examination will be only through online mode.

I don’t have access to a computer and no experience with online exams. How can I prepare for the exam?

National Testing Agency (NTA) has established a network of Test Practice Centres spread all over India to help the students aspiring to appear in examinations to be conducted by the NTA from 2019 onwards. The students can practice and train themselves before the examination for the “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode of examinations.

Is it mandatory to give the exam twice or can I give it once? If I give the exam both times, which score will be considered?

No, this is the candidate's choice. Whether he/she wishes to give one attempt or two is entirely up to them. In case they have attempted both the exams, the better of the two scores will be used for the purpose of ranking in the merit list.

What about syllabus, eligibility, language and other factors? Will they change?

No, these parameters will remain unchanged as per reports.
